Quantifying efficient information exchange in real network flows

چکیده
Network science enables the effective analysis of real interconnected systems, characterized by a complex interplay between topology and interconnections strength. It is well-known that network affects its resilience to failures or attacks, as well functions. Exchanging information crucial for many systems: internet, transportation networks brain are key examples. Despite introduction measures efficiency analyze flows, i.e. topologies weighted connectivity, here we show they fail capture combined link existence weight. In this letter propose physically-grounded estimator flow which can be computed every network, regardless from scale nature weights any (missing) metadata. Remarkably, results our captures heterogeneity flows along with topological differences complement obtained percolation several empirical including transportation, trade, migrations, networks. We cutting heaviest connections may increase average communication system hence, counterintuively, sparser not necessarily less efficient. comparison arising different fields, without possible pitfalls deriving flow.

Predicting Information Flows in Network Traffic
In optimizing information flows in networks, it would be useful to predict aspects of the network traffic. Yet, the notion of predicting network traffic does not appear in the relevant literature reporting analysis of network traffic. This literature is both well developed and skeptical about the value of traditional time series analysis on network data. It has consistently reported three “traf...
متن کاملEfficient Semantic Information Exchange for Ambient Intelligence
This paper studies semantic efficiency measures for ambient intelligence. We follow an agent-based approach and investigate how large quantities of information can be efficiently handled. We will show how to dynamically set up a communication network between agents which aims to minimize the communication load. The approach is based on a formal ontological notion of informativeness, on quantita...
متن کاملQuantifying loss of information in network-based dimensionality reduction techniques
To cope with the complexity of large networks, a number of dimensionality reduction techniques for graphs have been developed. However, the extent to which information is lost or preserved when these techniques are employed has not yet been clear. Here we develop a framework, based on algorithmic information theory, to quantify the extent to which information is preserved when network motif ana...
متن کاملQuantifying efficient information transduction of biochemical signaling cascades
Cells can be considered as systems that utilize changes in thermodynamic entropy as information. Therefore, they serve as useful models for investigating the relationships between entropy production and information transmission, i.e., signal transduction. Based on the hypothesis that cells apply a chemical reaction cascade for the most efficient transduction of information, we adopted a coding ...
متن کامل113: Hyporheic Exchange Flows
Water having entered a stream channel from the surrounding catchment may continue to have connections with the catchment. In the stream’s hyporheic zone, water “in the channel” exchanges with “groundwater” in the bed of the stream. Hyporheic exchange flows typically occur at scales small relative to the length and volumetric transport characteristics of the stream. Nevertheless, it is well docu...
